Tension in Liberia Over Dissolution of Muslim Security Group

Opponents have criticized the dissolution of a Muslim security group in Liberia, accusing authorities of targeting the country’s Muslim community over alleged threats to national security.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jefferson Koijee, Secretary-General of the Congress for Democratic Change, accused the Liberian government of targeting the country’s Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan, a move that has stirred controversy following a judicial order to halt the activities of a local security group.

The remarks came after a video circulated on social media showing a group identified as the Fula National Security in Liberia. Members of the group described themselves as a local security organization. Although the individuals in the video were unarmed, the group’s emergence raised concerns regarding its legal legitimacy, oversight, and potential security implications.

In response, the Ministry of Justice of Liberia immediately banned the group’s activities, describing it as an unauthorized entity that posed “serious national security concerns.” The decision has fueled broader debate over the legitimacy of local security groups and the scope of government responsibility in regulating security affairs.

Defending the group, Koijee stated that its purpose was to protect its community and facilities. He accused the government led by Joseph Boakai and his deputy, Jeremiah Koung, of unfairly targeting Muslims. He further alleged the destruction of mosques and the violent treatment of religious leaders by security forces, asserting that Muslims have safeguarded their own security during religious observances for years.

The government has not yet issued an official response to these claims. The issue has entered public debate at a time of rising political tensions in Liberia.
