Defending Islam Is Key to Winning the Next Election: Malaysian Politician

The president of Malaysia’s Amanah party says the party must project itself as a defender of Islam, arguing that religious perceptions among voters were decisive in its previous electoral defeat.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The president of Malaysia’s Amanah party has said the party must clearly demonstrate to the public that its members are defenders of Islam, an approach he believes could pave the way for victory in the next general election.

Mohamad Sabu, president of Amanah, made the remarks while addressing the party’s youth wing, stressing that public perception plays a decisive role in securing Malay votes. He said religious issues during the 2022 general election led many Muslim voters to distance themselves from the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

Referring to the situation in the state of Kelantan, Sabu said, “You can talk on social media about service-related problems such as water quality, but these issues do not win votes. What matters is that people feel Islam is secure.” He emphasized that this experience should be treated as an important lesson for the Amanah party going forward.
