Muslim Delhi University Professor Says Social Media, If Used Properly, Can Create Opportunities for Women

A Muslim professor at Delhi University has stressed individual responsibility in the digital age, saying social media are a double-edged tool that, with the right intent, can create new opportunities for women and contemporary society.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Dr. Amina Mirza, a professor at Delhi University, underscored the need to understand the transformations of the digital age, saying social media have become an inseparable part of modern life and that responsible use of these platforms can turn them into a positive force for individual and social development.

Referring to a verse from Surah al-Ra‘d, Mirza described change as a law of life and emphasized that improving social conditions begins with individual responsibility. According to her, technology and social media have transformed patterns of thinking and social relations, and the correct use of these tools ultimately rests with users themselves.

The academic described social media as “a double-edged sword,” noting that alongside its harms, the digital sphere has opened new opportunities for women. She said many women today have become active from their homes and with minimal cost in fields such as education, entrepreneurship, and skills training, enabling them to shape independent identities.

Highlighting the persistence of gender discrimination online, Mirza added that girls, particularly Muslim girls, are more frequently subjected to criticism and judgment than boys, and that religion is sometimes misused to target them unfairly.

In her concluding remarks, she stressed the need for a natural balance between religion and worldly life, saying that, “if one’s intention is sound, even social media can become a means of righteous action,” and urged women to play their positive role without fear, but with awareness and a sense of responsibility.
