AhlulBayt News Agency: Speaking at a press conference on Monday, November 2, Baqaei addressed questions about the status of Iran’s regional diplomatic initiatives and the possibility of Tehran’s role diminishing in mechanisms such as the “Contact Group.”
He said the Islamic Republic continued to play an active role in shaping and advancing regional diplomatic processes.
Referring to Iran’s diplomatic efforts over the past year, Baqaei said Tehran had used multilateral opportunities, including the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, to organise a quadrilateral meeting aimed at facilitating a new round of regional dialogue on Afghanistan.
The Iranian spokesperson also announced plans to hold another quadrilateral meeting in the coming months.
He said the Foreign Ministry’s director-general for bilateral affairs had travelled to key regional countries, including Turkey and Pakistan, to prepare for the meeting.
Baqaei emphasised that coordination among the principal regional stakeholders was being pursued seriously and that the Iranian diplomatic establishment continued to prioritise the initiative.
Moscow Format remains on Iran’s diplomatic agenda
Baqaei also referred to Iran’s continued engagement with the “Moscow Format” mechanism, saying that the process had been actively pursued during the Iranian month of Mehr (September–October).
He added that bilateral and multilateral consultations had also taken place on the sidelines of the process to ensure continued cooperation on Afghanistan.
Concluding his remarks, Baqaei stressed that geopolitical developments and regional tensions had not diverted Iran’s attention from Afghanistan-related diplomatic efforts.
He said countering terrorist threats and linking Afghanistan’s stability with the collective security of neighbouring countries remained among Tehran’s key priorities.
