AhlulBayt News Agency: A Danish court has found two men guilty of Quran desecration, fining them 10,000 kroner ($1,500) each for violating Denmark's law on the treatment of religious texts.
One of the convicted individuals is Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the anti-Islamic party Stram Kurs. The ruling was issued on Friday under a law enacted in December 2023, which prohibits inappropriate treatment of religious scriptures.
The legislation was introduced after a series of Quran desecrations and burnings in Denmark and Sweden, which triggered widespread protests and anger in several Muslim countries.
According to the court ruling, one of the two men, born in 1988, was found guilty of tearing pages from an English edition of the Quran before dropping the book into a puddle of water.
The incident was broadcast live on the Facebook page of Stram Kurs, further fueling controversy and condemnation.
Following the verdict, Paludan announced that he has appealed the ruling, seeking to overturn the fines imposed on him and his co-defendant.
The court determined that both men acted together, reinforcing the charge that their actions violated Denmark’s law on religious respect.
Denmark’s legal framework now explicitly bans the burning, desecration, tearing pages from, or publicly kicking religious texts, in an effort to curb public acts of religious provocation.
