AhlulBayt News Agency: Muslims in France are feeling increasingly exposed to "constant suspicion" following the publication of excerpts from a government-commissioned report on Muslim political communities. The warning came from the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM).
The CFCM expressed alarm over the potential consequences of the report, stating that many Muslim citizens feel unsafe from ongoing scrutiny. The report, titled “Political Islamism and the Muslim Brotherhood,” was prepared by two senior civil servants for presentation to the Defence Council and was partially published by the French daily Le Figaro.
The organization criticized the report for “fueling widespread suspicion” and called for a more nuanced and data-driven approach to evaluating threats linked to extremism. It emphasized that the fight against extremism must be based on a clear assessment of the threat, relying on rigorous data and precise identification of those responsible.
Concerns were raised over the use of vague terminology such as “Muslim Brotherhood,” “political Islam,” and “Islamist entryism,” warning that their undefined usage contributes to confusion and prejudice. The CFCM voiced deep concern over the potential misuse of the report’s findings, particularly regarding the identification of places of worship, institutions, associations, and individuals allegedly linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The organization warned that the vagueness surrounding the identity of these actors, combined with the seriousness of the accusations, could unjustly cast suspicion on all Muslim structures in France. This, they argued, risks fueling conspiracy theories, stigmatization, aggression, and threats to the physical safety of French Muslims and their places of worship.
The CFCM further stated that simply being Muslim or perceived as Muslim in France today “arouses suspicion,” calling this perception erroneous and dangerous. They urged authorities to be more discerning in addressing these issues, which are often misused for ideological, media, or political purposes.
The statement concluded by calling for greater clarity and precision to prevent confusion, hatred, and fear.
