Red Cross: Israel closes crossings, leaving 2.4m Gaza residents in peril

Pierre Krähenbühl of the Red Cross condemned Israel’s renewed war on Gaza, describing a severe humanitarian crisis with halted aid, widespread deaths, and starvation. Over 169,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed or wounded, as Gaza faces devastation and international appeals escalate.

AhlulBayt News Agency: On Monday, Pierre Krähenbühl, Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, declared that Gaza is enduring a catastrophic escalation of violence, describing the territory as trapped in an “inferno” following the renewed war. Krähenbühl highlighted the dire consequences, including widespread death, injury, displacement, starvation, and denial of humanitarian aid and dignity on an unprecedented scale.

Speaking at the Global Security Forum in Doha, Krähenbühl lamented that the fragile ceasefire agreement, which began on January 19 and raised hopes for an end to the suffering, was shattered when Israel resumed its genocidal campaign on March 18. Despite Hamas adhering to all terms, Israel abandoned the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreements, reigniting hostilities.

Warnings from international aid officials have intensified, predicting a looming humanitarian disaster in Gaza. The region’s population of approximately 2.4 million people is heavily reliant on humanitarian aid, which has been completely halted since March 2, following the closure of Gaza’s crossings, including Karm Abu Salem, Zikim, and Beit Hanoun.

Since October 7, 2023, with unwavering support from the United States, Israel has carried out acts of genocide in Gaza. The conflict has led to the martyrdom and injury of around 169,000 Palestinians—most of them children and women—and left more than 11,000 missing. As aid organizations struggle to address mounting needs, the crisis continues to spiral with devastating consequences for civilians trapped under siege.
