UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Situation in Myanmar

The UN Secretary-General said Myanmar’s humanitarian, political, and security crisis has deepened since the military coup, citing human rights abuses and the displacement of 5.2 million people, and called for regional action.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that five years after the military seized power in Myanmar, the country’s humanitarian, political, and security crisis has sharply deteriorated, marked by widespread human rights violations, mass displacement, and escalating violence.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres stressed that since the military coup and the arbitrary detention of members of the elected government, the suffering of the people of Myanmar has intensified. He said a cycle of impunity continues amid serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The statement pointed to a rise in transnational crime, economic instability, severe food insecurity, and the large-scale displacement of nearly 5.2 million people, both inside the country and across its borders. Guterres also condemned the escalation of violence, particularly the military’s air strikes on civilian areas and infrastructure and strongly denounced all forms of violence.

The UN Secretary-General called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, adhere to international law, and ensure safe, sustained, and unhindered access for humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance. Expressing solidarity with the people of Myanmar and their democratic aspirations, he underscored the need to support all communities, including the Rohingya Muslims.
