AhlulBayt News Agency: On the first day of the month of Muharram, the city of Lucknow was immersed in solemn remembrance, reverence, and tears, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions.
On Friday, homes across the city were adorned with private mourning setups, displaying taziyas and zarihs. The air resonated with emotional chants of “Labbayk Ya Hussain” and “Hussain Badshah,” filling the atmosphere with a profound spiritual aura.
Throughout the day, mourners gathered at imambaras and karbalas across the city to attend mourning gatherings, while at night, women held private mourning rituals at home, reciting elegies (nohas) and performing matam (ritual chest beating) in memory of Imam Hussain's (A.S) sacrifice.
With this, the period of mourning has officially begun not only in Lucknow but across India, lasting for two months and eight days.
The voices that rose in Lucknow on the first of Muharram once again affirmed that the legacy of Imam Hussain (A.S) is alive and will endure forever. No matter what form Yazidiyat (the ideology of oppression and tyranny) takes, its defeat is certain.
Addressing the majlis marking the start of Muharram, prominent Shia cleric and Secretary General of the Indian Ulema Council Maulana Kalbe Jawad declared, “Karbala is not a tale of the past—it is a living truth of every era. The Yazid of that time sought allegiance from Imam Hussain (A.S.), and today’s Yazid demands allegiance from his descendants. But just as Yazid of the past failed, so too will the Yazids of today. Tyranny has always been destined to fail.”
He emphasized that the martyrs of Karbala never bowed before oppressive powers. “They fought for truth, for justice, and sacrificed their lives for the oppressed.”
