Syrian Ministry Denies Closure of Sayyida Zainab Shrine or Ban on Muharram Mourning Ceremonies

The Syrian Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqaf) has denied recent reports circulating on some media platforms and social networks claiming that the Sayyida Zainab shrine in Damascus has been closed or that Muharram mourning ceremonies have been banned.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Ministry released a statement on Saturday clarifying that the shrine remains open to pilgrims and that there are no restrictions on holding religious ceremonies during Ashura or throughout the month of Muharram.

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to facilitating pilgrimages for all visitors while ensuring organized rituals and implementing security measures to protect pilgrims.

Earlier, rumors had spread suggesting the shrine was closed and that authorities were preventing the holding of Muharram rituals at the site. However, photos shared on social media showed gatherings of dozens of people participating in the first night of Muharram commemorations at the shrine.

The Syrian Presidency had also previously denied issuing any directive to halt mourning ceremonies in the Sayyida Zainab area.
