UN appoints Miguel Angel Moratinos as Islamophobia envoy

Miguel Angel Moratinos Cuyaubé, a veteran Spanish diplomat, has been appointed by the United Nations as the special envoy to address Islamophobia. He will take on this role while continuing to serve as the High Representative for the UNAOC, reinforcing efforts to promote intercultural dialogue and combat discrimination worldwide.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The United Nations has appointed veteran Spanish diplomat Miguel Angel Moratinos Cuyaubé as the special envoy tasked with addressing Islamophobia, the UN spokesperson’s office announced on Wednesday.

Moratinos will assume this new responsibility while continuing to serve as the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), a position he has held since 2019.

The UNAOC is a UN initiative that promotes intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding across communities, particularly in areas affected by conflict or division.

In its statement, the UN highlighted Moratinos’ extensive background in diplomacy and his longstanding commitment to fostering inclusive dialogue.

“Mr. Moratinos brings decades of diplomatic experience and leadership on multilateral issues, including dialogue among civilizations and combating discrimination,” the spokesperson's office noted.

Moratinos’ diplomatic career includes serving as Spain’s foreign minister from 2004 to 2010. During that time, Spain held the presidency of the UN Security Council and played leading roles in several international forums, including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe.

His appointment as special envoy comes amid growing international concern over the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment and discriminatory practices targeting Muslim communities around the world.
