AhlulBayt News Agency: Authorities in France have launched an investigation following threats made against a mosque in Sucy-en-Brie, a southeastern suburb approximately 15 kilometers from central Paris.
A man reportedly left a threatening and offensive voicemail targeting Muslims, prompting swift action by law enforcement.
According to Le Parisien, the call was received last Thursday at around 9 p.m. In the message, the caller used vulgar language and made direct threats. “You are filthy Muslim sh***(…). You want to play the victims, filthy pigs… We’re going to slit your throats,” he said, as quoted verbatim by the French news outlet.
Driss Soussi, who heads the Sucy Muslim Cultural Association, stated that the mosque promptly alerted the police. Authorities responded quickly, leading to the arrest of a suspect on Saturday.
In the days following the threat, a man visited the mosque claiming to be related to the caller. According to Le Parisien, he expressed regret and offered a conciliatory email, suggesting possible ways to “make amends for his nephew’s wrongdoing.” However, it later emerged that this same individual had in fact made the threatening call himself.
Upon further police investigation, the man reportedly admitted to leaving the hateful message, stating that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time. He was identified and summoned by police on Sunday after his email was traced.
Soussi praised the rapid response of the authorities and emphasized that such incidents are highly unusual in the area.
The threat comes amid heightened concern within the Muslim community in France, which is still grappling with the aftermath of a violent attack at the La Grand-Combe mosque in April. In that incident, a 22-year-old worshipper named Aboubaker Cissé was fatally stabbed during morning prayers by a man identified as Olivier A., who shouted anti-Islamic slurs during the attack.
The murder sparked widespread outrage among Muslims in France, many of whom have called for stronger protections and clearer condemnation of Islamophobic violence. While some French officials have acknowledged the religious hatred underlying the attack, others have refrained from explicitly labeling it as Islamophobic.
French Prime Minister François Bayrou addressed the matter directly, stating in a recent interview: “The facts are clear: A 22-year-old man was murdered in a mosque while he was praying. His attacker filed the killing while hurling insults against Allah. So I ask: If this isn’t hatred directed at Islam, then what is it?”
