Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli: Qur'an Mandates 'Special Jihad' Against Hypocrites

AhlulBayt News Agency: In a sharp critique of hypocritical behavior in society, a prominent Iranian cleric has emphasized that the Holy Qur'an issues a clear command for a "special jihad" against hypocrites (Munafiq), distinguishing them from other adversaries.

Grand Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi-Amoli, in his exegesis of the Qur'an, specifically in the 17th volume of Thematic Interpretation on page 241, highlighted the severe divine condemnation of the social conduct of hypocrites.

Citing verse 2:8, the revered source of emulation referenced the defining trait of hypocrisy:
﴿ وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴾
"And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers."

Ayatollah Javadi-Amoli elaborated on the deceptive nature of this group, explaining that their schemes ultimately backfire. He cited verse 2:9:
﴿ يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴾
"They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not."

The cleric pointed out that unlike the faithful, hypocrites forge alliances with disbelievers. He referenced verse 4:138-139 to underscore this point, noting that the Qur'an ultimately groups hypocrites with disbelievers in the hereafter, though he clarified that their status in the afterlife occupies the lowest depths of the fire.

﴿ إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الْأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ ﴾
"Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." (4:145)

According to the grand ayatollah, the most treacherous acts of sabotage during the Prophet's battles in Medina were attributed to the hypocrites, who would spread rumors to destabilize the Muslim community.

Citing this historical context, His Eminence concluded that the divine command to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not merely to tolerate such subversion but to confront it with severity. He pointed to verse 9:73 as the legislative basis for this directive:
﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ﴾
"O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them."

The remarks by Ayatollah Javadi-Amoli serve to highlight the ideological distinction within Islamic teachings regarding internal subversion, framing the struggle against hypocrisy as a distinct and severe obligation separate from that against open disbelief.
