Netanyahu accused of using Gaza war to delay corruption trial

Israeli lawmakers accuse Netanyahu of prolonging the Gaza war to avoid conviction in his corruption trial.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Several members of the Israeli Knesset have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately prolonging the war in Gaza to derail his ongoing corruption trial. Naama Lazimi, a Knesset member, stated that Netanyahu is jeopardizing Israel’s future by tying it to his legal troubles.

She argued that Netanyahu has proven himself unfit for office by allegedly offering to end the war in exchange for political concessions that would halt his indictment. Gilad Kariv, another lawmaker, condemned Netanyahu and his allies for risking national security and the lives of Israeli captives to protect him from conviction.

Karine Elharrar, also a Knesset member, warned that Netanyahu is undermining the public interest by linking his legal fate to negotiations with Hamas and regional normalization efforts. Critics say this strategy prioritizes personal survival over national well-being.

Netanyahu’s corruption trial, which began in May 2020, includes charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust—offenses that could lead to lengthy prison terms if proven. He is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to stand trial as a criminal defendant.

In addition to domestic charges, Netanyahu faces international scrutiny. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for him and former defense minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump, who recently called for the charges against him to be dropped. Trump described the trial as a “ridiculous witch hunt” and a “horror show,” urging Israeli authorities to end the proceedings.

Despite the mounting evidence and hundreds of witness testimonies, Netanyahu continues to deny all allegations, calling them fabrications and maintaining his innocence.
