AhlulBayt News Agency – Iran has welcomed the announcement of an immediate ceasefire between Pakistan and India following days of deadly clashes triggered by a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last month.
In a statement on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei urged both Islamabad and New Delhi to seize this "opportunity" to reduce tensions and establish lasting peace in the region. He praised the two nations for their “responsible and prudent” decision to halt hostilities.
Baghaei expressed optimism that normalcy between India and Pakistan would be restored soon.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ishaq Dar, announced the ceasefire on Saturday after several days of military strikes and counterstrikes following the April 22 attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
The announcement was first made by US President Donald Trump, who shared the news in a social media post, confirming that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated sharply after the deadly Pahalgam attack. India accused Pakistan of involvement, but Pakistan denied the allegations.
Both nations had hinted that the ongoing tensions could lead to a military confrontation.
The United Nations urged both sides to exercise restraint.
