UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Thursday welcomed Israel's decision to pull its troops out of Lebanon's Ghajar region, as an "important step" in settling hostilities in the region.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Israel decided to withdraw its defence forces from northern Ghajar to the south of the so-called blue line border with Lebanon that was proposed by UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ordered a ceasefire of the Hezbollah-Israel fighting in 2006.

"The UN intends to continue to work closely with all parties in the coming period in a process to resolve the permanent status of Ghajar," Ban said in a statement.

Ban commended all sides for their continued commitment to implement resolution 1701 and expressed his determination to fully implement UN resolutions dealing with conflict in the Middle East.
