Brazil's Lula Expresses Support for Spain's Sanchez in 'No to War' Stance on West Asia

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has expressed support for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s opposition to the conflict in the West Asia region, saying the two nations stand in the same trench in defending peace and diplomacy.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has expressed support for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s opposition to the conflict in the West Asia region, saying the two nations stand in the same trench in defending peace and diplomacy.

He made these remarks during the first Spain–Brazil bilateral meeting held in Barcelona, according to Latin American satellite news TV TeleSUR.

Lula said he fully understood Sanchez’s “no to war” position, recalling that he adopted a similar stance in 2003 when Brazil was asked to participate in the Iraq War. He noted that both countries share a common approach to addressing global challenges through solutions that do not rely on extreme or divisive rhetoric.

Highlighting current international tensions, Lula warned that the world may be entering a new arms race in which civilians, including women and children, are increasingly vulnerable, and technological tools risk replacing human ethical considerations.

He also emphasized the symbolic significance of meeting in Barcelona, a city that played a historic role during the Spanish Civil War. Lula added that both nations believe democracy must deliver tangible benefits for citizens and said Brazil has much to learn from Spain’s experience.

The Barcelona meeting marks the beginning of three joint international events, including a Spain–Brazil dialogue, a forum on defending democracy, and a progressive gathering expected to draw thousands of participants.

Prior to the summit, Lula had cautioned that rising regional tensions could carry serious global economic consequences and urged diplomatic solutions over military confrontation.

Questioning the motivations behind the escalation, the Spanish prime minister criticized its impact on regional stability, international norms, and humanitarian conditions, including renewed tensions in Iraq and Lebanon and the worsening crisis in the Gaza Strip.
