Pomona College Labeled a “Hostile Environment” for Muslims in Report by CAIR

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has classified Pomona College in California as a “hostile environment” for Muslims, citing restrictions on pro-Palestinian protests and disciplinary measures against students.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR), in a report examining Islamophobia and freedom of expression at universities in the United States, classified Pomona College in California among institutions considered to have a “hostile environment” for students.

The civil rights organization stated that, in its assessment of 51 U.S. universities between 2024 and 2025, 45 higher education institutions were placed in this category due to actions that allegedly caused students to feel unsafe, targeted, or subject to discrimination.

According to Amr Shabaik, legal director of the organization’s Los Angeles office, key factors behind the evaluation included the rejection of student demands to divest from investments in the occupied territories, the launch of investigations in 2024 related to alleged anti-Palestinian bias, and measures taken against student gatherings.

The report also referred to the suspension of 12 students by college president G. Gabrielle Starr and the extensive use of law enforcement personnel in responding to protesters.
