AhlulBayt News Agency: The restoration and renovation work of the Malik (king) Grand Mosque in the city of Elbasan in Albania is nearing completion and it will soon be reopened to worshippers.
In a move that demonstrates the convergence of efforts to preserve Islamic heritage with its Ottoman character and increase the attractiveness of historic cities, Elbasan Mayor Glidian Latia, along with Sheikh Ajim Duka, Mufti of Elbasan, and representatives of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), visited the restoration process of the Al-Malik Mosque in the historic Citadel area in the city center.
They stressed that the work is nearing completion, which paves the way for the imminent reopening of the mosque to worshippers and visitors.
Al-Malik Mosque in Elbasan is one of the most important historical monuments that bear witness to the early presence of Islam in central Albania, according to the Muslimsaroundtheworld website.
Not only is this the oldest mosque in the city, but it is also an architectural monument linked to a pivotal period in the region’s history, dating back to the late 15th century. For centuries, the mosque has remained a religious and cultural center with a profound impact on the surrounding areas.
The mayor of Elbasan explained that the visit to the mosque was made to monitor the progress of the restoration project.
Stating that the project is nearing completion, he said the mosque will soon open its doors to worshippers and will become an important destination for tourists and visitors interested in the history and Ottoman architecture of the region.
Elbasan mayor emphasized that this project stems from a commitment to paying due attention to religious sites while preserving the city’s cultural heritage.
These historical sites are not merely religious spaces for the Muslim community, but are essential elements of the urban landscape that connect the past with the present and enhance the city’s value for its residents and visitors, he said.
The mayor went on to say that the restoration of the mosque is being carried out in parallel with the project to revitalize the Citadel area, a space with identity, history and significant potential for cultural tourism. This will open new horizons for the local economy and give the city a wider presence on the cultural tourism map of Albania.
