Grand Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani: Any Threat Against Leader of Islamic Revolution Constitutes ‘Waging War’

Senior Iranian cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani has strongly warned that any form of threat or aggression against the Leader of the Islamic Revolution amounts to moharebeh (waging war against God), stressing that defending the Leader is not merely a political stance but a clear religious obligation.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Senior Iranian cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani has strongly warned that any form of threat or aggression against the Leader of the Islamic Revolution amounts to moharebeh (waging war against God), stressing that defending the Leader is not merely a political stance but a clear religious obligation.

Speaking during a meeting with a group of Tehran’s congregational prayer leaders, the senior marjaʿ underlined the critical responsibility of the clergy in the current circumstances, noting that Iran is facing a sensitive and decisive period.

“Today the enemy has mobilized all its capabilities, particularly in cyberspace, to target the clergy and the foundations of religion,” Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani said. “The clergy must therefore remain present in the field. The role of an imam of congregation is not limited to leading prayers; religious scholars must not abandon society or remain indifferent to the people’s conditions.”

He sharply criticized the silence or delayed reactions of certain elites during periods of unrest, questioning their calculations. “I truly wonder what some individuals are thinking,” he said. “Do they imagine that if the Islamic Republic were to be weakened or destroyed, the enemy would allow any trace of God, the Qur’an, or the Ahl al-Bayt to remain?”

Referring to recent unrest, the senior cleric recalled attacks on mosques, hosseiniyehs, and religious symbols. “We all witnessed how the Qur’an was set on fire. Are such actions really about economic grievances?” he asked. “There is no doubt that people are under economic pressure, but those who killed people, torched property, and spread chaos were not from among the people.”

Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani also condemned the United States for openly encouraging unrest in Iran. He noted that the US president has explicitly issued threats against the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. “He is not worthy of a response,” the cleric said, “but he must know that Ayatollah Khamenei, as a jurist and the Leader of the Ummah, is under the protection of Islamic law. Anyone who seeks to harm him is a mohareb (Enemy of God). We have previously explained the jurisprudential foundations of this ruling.”

He called on all religious scholars to take a clear and timely stance in support of the Leader, emphasizing that such support is rooted in religious duty rather than partisan politics. “Defending the leadership is a religious obligation,” he stressed.

The senior cleric reiterated the need for national unity but cautioned against misusing the concept of cohesion as a pretext for inaction or lack of oversight. “Unity does not mean silence in the face of wrongdoing,” he said. “Supervisory institutions must carry out their responsibilities, and no one should be allowed to act without accountability under the excuse of preserving unity.”

In his concluding remarks, Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani defined true national cohesion as working collectively to resolve the people’s problems. Citing the Leader’s call for greater effort, he said, “When the Leader says officials must work twice as hard, it means the judiciary must accelerate the handling of cases, parliament must strengthen oversight, and the executive must work day and night to address the people’s economic and social difficulties.”
