AhlulBayt News Agency: The United States has officially lifted its designation of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as al-Nusra Front, as a foreign terrorist organization—following HTS’s rise to power in Syria after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad and its indication to normalize ties with Israel.
In a memo dated June 23 and filed Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the decision to revoke the group’s designation after consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury.
The memo appeared in a preview of the Federal Register and is scheduled for official publication on Tuesday.
This development follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent executive order easing unilateral sanctions against Syria.
The U.S. sanctions on Damascus had been in place since 1979, rooted in Syria’s opposition to Israel.
Following Assad’s fall, Israel carried out hundreds of airstrikes across Syria and seized extensive areas beyond the Golan Heights.
The newly established Syrian regime has signaled its willingness to normalize relations with Tel Aviv.
Reports indicate that both sides are in talks aimed at reaching a formal normalization agreement by 2026.
