AhlulBayt News Agency: The Iraqi government has strongly rejected recent accusations made by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Interior Ministry against the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), calling the claims baseless and unacceptable under any circumstances.
Spokesperson for the Iraqi army, Sabah al-Naaman, issued a statement emphasizing the sensitivity of the matter, noting that KRG officials have yet to provide evidence supporting their accusations to Baghdad.
The remarks came after the KRG Interior Ministry reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle had crashed in an uninhabited area near Erbil on Thursday night.
It alleged that elements linked to the PMU — also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi — were behind the incident and had intended to provoke disorder.
Naaman reaffirmed that Iraq’s federal government and its security agencies remain committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens and safeguarding national stability.
He stressed that Baghdad will take firm legal measures against any group attempting to compromise Iraq’s security or disturb public order.
The Iraqi military spokesperson called for disputes to be addressed through official and legal frameworks, rather than by releasing statements that could jeopardize national institutions.
He warned that baseless claims open the door for hostile actors to undermine Iraq’s internal security and promote instability.
Hashd al-Sha’abi forces have played a vital role in liberating areas previously under Daesh control throughout Iraq.
In November 2016, the Iraqi parliament passed legislation formally integrating the PMU into the country’s armed forces, granting its fighters full rights, including salaries and pensions equivalent to those of army and police personnel.
