AhlulBayt News Agency: Colombia has officially appointed Jorge Ivan Ospina as its first ambassador to Palestine, reinforcing its diplomatic presence nearly seven years after recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state.
According to IRNA, the decision by President Gustavo Petro’s government establishes an embassy in Ramallah, marking a formal expansion of Colombia’s engagement with Palestine, Rai al-Youm reported Monday.
In May 2024, Petro severed diplomatic relations with Israel, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration of committing genocide in Gaza. Ospina’s appointment, confirmed by Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia, underscores Colombia’s firm stance on Palestinian statehood and ongoing support for the Palestinian people.
Ospina, a former mayor of Cali and a close ally of Petro, expressed his commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights. In a post on X, he pledged to “denounce the genocide the Palestinian people are suffering today” and work toward their liberation.
Colombia has consistently voiced opposition to Israeli actions, standing in solidarity with Palestinians. On Monday, Petro reiterated his call for the United States to intervene and help halt the violence in Gaza.
Ospina’s appointment symbolizes a deepening of Colombia-Palestine ties amid ongoing regional tensions.
