AhlulBayt News Agency: In a compelling letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, more than 800 British legal experts, including retired supreme court justices, demand immediate sanctions against Israel, citing urgent legal obligations to prevent genocide in Gaza and uphold international humanitarian law.
The call for sanctions reflects a growing concern among legal professionals about the U.K.'s role in addressing Israeli war crimes and human rights violations in Palestine, emphasizing the need for accountability in international relations. The letter highlights a perceived failure of the U.K. government to act decisively in response to escalating violence in Gaza, where over 53,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since October 2023. The signatories argue that the U.K.'s inaction undermines the international legal system and contributes to a climate of impunity. The U.K. must impose sanctions on the Israeli government and its ministers and also consider suspending it from the UN to meet its “fundamental international legal obligations”, more than 800 lawyers, academics and retired senior judges, including former supreme court justices, have said.
There is mounting evidence of genocide, which is either being perpetrated or, at a minimum at serious risk of occurring, the letter states, highlighting recent comments by the Israeli finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who said Israel’s army would “wipe out” what remains of Palestinian Gaza.
The signatories tell Starmer: “All states, including the UK, are legally obliged to take all reasonable steps within their power to prevent and punish genocide; to ensure respect for international humanitarian law; and to bring to an end violations of [the right to self-determination]. The UK’s actions to date have failed to meet those standards … The international community’s failure to uphold international law in relation to the occupied Palestinian territory contributes to a deteriorating international climate of lawlessness and impunity and imperils the international legal system itself. Your government must act now, before it is too late.” The legal experts argue that the U.K.'s current actions, including the suspension of trade negotiations, are insufficient. They demand a comprehensive review of existing ties with Israel and immediate sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations. The letter also critiques Israel's actions against UN agencies and calls for the U.K. to uphold its commitments under international law, reinforcing the notion that peace cannot be achieved without accountability.
