AhlulBayt News Agency: South Africa has denounced Israel for using “starvation as a weapon of war” in Gaza, after the occupying regime blocked the entry of humanitarian aid.
Israel has stopped aid supplies into the enclave to force Hamas to extend the first phase of a ceasefire agreement until mid-April. Hamas, however, insists on moving to the second phase of the ceasefire, which should lead to a permanent end to the war.
“Preventing food from entering Gaza is a continuation of Israel's use of starvation as a weapon of war as part of the ongoing campaign of what the ICJ ruled to be plausible genocide against the Palestinian people,” the South African foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
It added that the people of Gaza are experiencing “immeasurable suffering and urgently need food, shelter and medical supplies.”
South Africa called on the international community to hold Israel accountable.
In December 2023, South Africa brought a case before the International Court of Justice, arguing that the war in Gaza breached the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention. Several countries have since joined the genocide case against Israel, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Cuba, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain, and Turkey.
