AhlulBayt News Agency: The United States government has announced new sanctions against companies, individuals, and tankers that it claims have been involved in the export of Iranian oil.
The US Treasury Department stated on Tuesday that nearly two dozen companies in a global network have been targeted for allegedly shipping Iranian oil to China.
These sanctions were imposed just days after Iran and the US held a fourth round of indirect talks, aimed at negotiating a deal that could lift US sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) explained that the new sanctions target companies, buyers, and facilitators associated with Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff. The sanctions also apply to Sepehr Energy, which the US describes as the force’s main commercial affiliate.
According to the Treasury, this marks the 19th round of sanctions imposed by the US government against Iran since February 4, when President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum initiating a campaign of maximum pressure on the country.
Iran has repeatedly dismissed the significance of US sanctions, arguing that they have minimal impact on its economy. However, Iranian authorities have warned that imposing sanctions during ongoing nuclear negotiations could undermine Tehran’s confidence in the process.
The indirect talks between Iran and the US began in early April under Oman’s mediation. Both sides have described the discussions as generally positive.
The latest designations announced by OFAC include companies based in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Seychelles. Additionally, two tankers and an Iranian individual, identified as a financial inspector for Sepehr Energy, have been sanctioned.
