UNAMA Report: Taliban forced 50 Ismaili Shia muslims to convert religion

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed deep concern in a new report over the Taliban government's forced religious conversions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: the report was published on Thursday, April 11, titled "The Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan" and spans seven pages. It covers the period from January to March 2025.

In the section titled "Freedom of Religion," the report states that between January 17 and February 3, at least 50 Ismaili Shia men in Badakhshan province were forced by local Taliban authorities—especially from the Department of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice—to adopt Sunni Islam.

The report mentions that these Ismaili Shias were taken from their homes at night for interrogation on religious matters. Those who refused to convert were beaten, coerced, and even threatened with death.

The UN report also notes that the Taliban administration has established several Sunni religious schools (madrasas) in Ismaili-populated areas of the province and has asked Ismaili children to enroll and receive Sunni religious education.

It is worth noting that ABNA had earlier reported confirmation from a local source in Badakhshan that the Taliban had forced some Ismaili Shias to change their religion.

According to that source, the Taliban had also converted several religious centers of Ismaili Shias into their own Sunni madrasas.
