ICJ to hear case on Israel's ban of UNRWA in Palestine

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to begin hearings on Monday in the case filed by Türkiye and 39 other nations, including members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, African Union, and the United Nations, against Israel’s decision to ban the activities of the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) in Palestine.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to begin hearings on Monday in the case filed by Türkiye and 39 other nations, including members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, African Union, and the United Nations, against Israel’s decision to ban the activities of the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) in Palestine.

The hearings, scheduled to last five days, will include submissions from all nations supporting the case.

In December 2024, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly, with 137 countries in favor and only 12 opposing, to refer the case to the ICJ.

On Saturday, the administration of former US President Donald Trump made a controversial decision to remove the immunity of UNRWA, effectively excluding it from the United Nations, thereby allowing it to face legal action in US courts.

Earlier, on February 17, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu introduced legislation banning UNRWA, which was approved by a majority in the Knesset.

On October 28, 2024, the Israeli Knesset passed two additional laws further restricting UNRWA’s operations by prohibiting it from conducting any activities in the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories, revoking its privileges and facilities, and forbidding any official engagement with the agency.

As of January 30, the ban on UNRWA’s activities in the occupied Palestinian territories has been fully enforced, barring the agency from having offices, providing services, or conducting any activities directly or indirectly in the region.
