In a year marked by unimaginable suffering in Gaza, a heart-wrenching image of a young Palestinian boy — who lost both his hands in an Israeli airstrike — has been awarded the Best News Photo of the Year.
Ahlul Bayt (AS) News Agency - ABNA: The image of a Palestinian child without hands has been named the Best News Photo of 2025, at a time when Palestinian children continue to lose their limbs in Israel’s genocidal war against the people of Gaza, under the indifferent gaze of the international community.
The crimes committed by the Zionist regime against the Gaza Strip over the past year and a half have so far led to the martyrdom of more than 51,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. During this period, thousands of Palestinians have been injured and disabled as a result of the regime’s brutal attacks.
Last year, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned about what he called widespread disability in Gaza, emphasizing that Gaza holds the highest percentage of child amputees in the world.
Recently, on social media, an image has been circulating showing a Palestinian child who has lost both hands.
The 2025 World Press Photo of the Year award has been given to a portrait of a 9-year-old Palestinian boy who lost both of his hands during an Israeli attack on Gaza.
The World Press Photo Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, was founded in 1955 and is known for organizing the world's most prestigious and largest annual photojournalism contest.
