AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Four Bahraini women jailed over what activists say were politically motivated charges were freed on Thursday under the kingdom’s alternative punishment law.
Amira Al-Qashaami, Faten Hussein, Hamida Joumaa and Mona Habib had served two and a half of their three-year prison sentences.
Activists shared images online of the women rejoicing as they were being reunited with their loved ones.
The alternative punishment law was introduced in May of last year and allows judges to free prisoners that the judiciary deems are unlikely to commit a ‘crime’ in the future.
The law is reportedly aimed at easing congestion in Bahrain’s prisons where overcrowding is widespread.
