(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A senior Iranian lawmaker has envisaged victory for Egypt's Islamic parties and political figures in the North African country's upcoming parliamentary elections.
“It is predictable that what happened in Tunisia will be repeated in the next elections in Egypt and the Egyptian people will cast their votes in favor of Islamic figures,” said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of Iran's Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, IRNA reported Friday.
Egypt is due to hold its three-round parliamentary elections starting on November 28 in the aftermath of a revolution that toppled ex-ruler Hosni Mubarak on February 11. Polls for the Shura Council, or the upper chamber, are also set to open on January 29.
The senior Iranian parliamentarian also made reference to the recent vote in post-revolution Tunisia and pointed out that Tunisia's elections indicate the general public's inclination towards the establishment of Islamic ruling systems.
During Sunday's parliamentary elections in Tunisia, Ennahda Party, the country's major Islamic faction, won the majority of votes.
Boroujerdi further noted that the recent popular uprisings in the Islamic countries are 'swiftly' moving towards an 'Islamic renaissance' which will lead to the formation of 'independent' parliaments.
The Iranian legislator also warned against the Western efforts to hijack the popular uprisings in the Arab world in order to deflect the wave of Islamic Awakening in those countries.
Since January, a wave of popular uprisings against the ruling of despotic regimes has spread across the Middle East and North Africa.
