At least eleven people have sustained injuries after a bomb went off in close proximity of a police patrol in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The incident happened on Monday after an explosives-laden car targeted an Iraqi police patrol in Tuz Khurmato township, located 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of the capital Baghdad. There were four policemen among the injured, a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, unknown attackers approached a checkpoint on Monday in the Mishraq neighborhood of Mosul, situated some 396 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of Baghdad, and shot two officers dead.

The assailants escaped the scene in a vehicle and their whereabouts are unknown. Police cordoned off the area after the attack and launched an investigation.

In another Monday development, Lieutenant Colonel Salam Juma'a was killed after a magnetic "sticky bomb" attached to his vehicle went off in Baiji city, located some 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad.

The explosion also left two Iraqi police officers wounded and caused severe damages to the car, according to witnesses.

Meanwhile, the month of June was reportedly the deadliest month so far this year for Iraqis, and the bloodiest in the past three years for the US military.

At least 271 Iraqis -- among them 155 civilians, 77 policemen and 39 soldiers -- died in terrorist attacks last month, according to a government count.

The development comes as the US continues to press the Iraqi government to extend its military presence in the war-torn country. Many Iraqi officials and other leaders have expressed intense opposition to the extension of US troop presence in their country, with some groups threatening to target American interests in the oil-rich state if they are allowed to stay.
