AhlulBayt News Agency: Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the world’s Catholics, has issued his strongest condemnation yet of the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, blaming what he called a “delusion of omnipotence” for fueling the conflict and urging political leaders to pursue peace.
Speaking during an evening prayer service at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, the pope denounced the escalation of violence, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to negotiations. “Enough of the idolatry of self and money. Enough of the display of power. Enough of war,” he said, according to Politico.
The remarks came as US and Iranian representatives held negotiations in Pakistan and amid a fragile ceasefire. Although Pope Leo did not directly name the United States or President Donald Trump, his message appeared aimed at American officials who have justified the war in religious terms and emphasized military strength.
According to Politico, the Pope had initially refrained from openly condemning the conflict, limiting his statements to calls for dialogue. However, in recent days, he has sharpened his tone, previously describing threats to “annihilate Iranian civilization” as “truly unacceptable.”
He also called on people worldwide to pray for peace, describing prayer as a means to “break the demonic cycle of evil” and build a world free of violence and “unjust profit.”
The Vatican has expressed growing concern about the wider regional impact of the war, particularly the situation of Christian communities in southern Lebanon amid escalating tensions.
