Australian priest: Support for Israeli crimes emboldens regime to act with impunity

An Anglican priest from Australia has condemned the supports of the Evangelical Christians for Israeli crimes stressing that as the reason for the regime to continue actions with impunity.

ABNA24 - An Anglican priest from Australia has condemned the supports of the Evangelical Christians for Israeli crimes stressing that as the reason for the regime to continue actions with impunity.

Father David Smith, speaking at the international webinar on “The Legacy of Imam Khamenei, Roots and Ideas” held amid the ongoing US-Israeli aggression said the war imposed on Iran has shaken the world both for the scale of violence unleashed and for the rhetoric surrounding it.

He said,” One especially disturbing dimension of this is that the State of Israel currently receives more uncritical support in the United States from Evangelical Christians than it does from its Jewish community.”

He noted that the Christian support forms a political shield that allows Israeli governments and their allies to act with near-total impunity, even when their actions violate international law and threaten catastrophic escalation.

Father Smith added,” Anyone who can see the terrible war crimes committed by US and Israeli forces over the last few weeks – most obviously the murder of so many schoolgirls at Minab – and suggest that this is the will of God, really has no concept of the law of God or the character of God.”

He emphasized the need to defend the dignity and rights of Palestinians, resist rhetoric that sacralizes war, reject any theology that makes violence a prerequisite for Christ’s return and call on political leaders of every nation to account when they threaten.

“One of the first things the church could and should do is to formally excommunicate both US President, Donald Trump, and Peter Heseth, the self-titled ‘Minister of War’” said Father Smith and added,” I believe that both the Pope and bishops and Archbishops everywhere should be doing this – letting the world know that the church will not sanction this illegal and immoral war of aggression.”

The Australian priest said the church leaders should call upon all the members of the armed forces who are affiliated with their faith communities to refuse to fight if fighting requires them to commit war crimes.”

He concluded,” As for the faithful, they need to beware of Christian Zionism which, under the guise of faithfulness to Scripture, blesses the very actions that the Scriptures condemn.”
