Ayatollah Arafi Urges Russian Orthodox Patriarch to Condemn US, Israeli ‘Crimes Against Humanity’

Iranian seminary official Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has called on the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to take a clear and principled stance against what he described as “grave crimes against humanity” committed by the United States and the Israeli regime.

ABNA24 - Iranian seminary official Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has called on the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to take a clear and principled stance against what he described as “grave crimes against humanity” committed by the United States and the Israeli regime.

In a formal letter addressed to Patriarch Kirill, the spiritual leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Ayatollah Arafi expressed deep sorrow and outrage over recent developments, including the assassination of a senior Shia religious authority and the bombing of a girls’ school in the southern Iranian city of Minab.

The senior cleric, who heads Iran’s Islamic seminaries, condemned the deliberate targeting of a top religious figure as an “egregious affront to all divine religions” and warned that such actions pose a serious and unprecedented threat to spiritual leadership worldwide. He emphasized that attacks on religious authorities are not only politically motivated acts of violence, but also represent a broader attempt to undermine faith, moral authority, and interreligious harmony.

Ayatollah Arafi further urged Patriarch Kirill to unequivocally denounce these acts and to adopt a firm humanitarian position regarding the killing of innocent civilians, particularly children. He described the attack on the school in Minab as a “heinous crime” that violates all international norms and moral principles.

Highlighting the shared responsibility of religious leaders, the letter called for greater unity among faith communities in confronting injustice and defending human dignity. Ayatollah Arafi stressed that silence in the face of such atrocities could embolden perpetrators and deepen global instability.

He also warned of the dangerous precedent set by targeting religious figures, noting that continued inaction could expose spiritual leaders across the world to similar threats. The Iranian cleric concluded by urging coordinated efforts among religious authorities to raise awareness, mobilize public opinion, and prevent further escalation of violence against both civilians and religious institutions.
