AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has submitted a petition to India’s Supreme Court seeking judicial action against Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Governor of Assam, over what it described as “overtly sectarian and deeply divisive” remarks targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims.
The petition, signed by Maulana Mahmood Madani, President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, states that Sarma abused his official position, violated constitutional principles, and subjected an entire community to stigmatization and social exclusion.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind stressed that such statements, when made by a senior government official, go beyond the bounds of free speech or political competition and constitute clear instances of hate speech, the incitement of social hostility, and the erosion of constitutional responsibility. The petition also noted that the term “Miya” in Assam is widely recognized as a derogatory label used against Muslims of Bengali origin.
