AhlulBayt News Agency: U.S. Senator Chris Murphy has declared that President Donald Trump's recent military strikes targeting Iran's nuclear sites were unlawful under U.S. and international norms.
In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Murphy addressed recent American and Israeli military actions, stressing that Trump’s attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities lack legal grounding.
When asked about Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s suggestion that the strikes could be grounds for impeachment, Murphy replied, “That’s a decision the House makes... but it is clear that this is illegal.”
Under U.S. law, the House decides on impeachment while the Senate determines conviction. Murphy implied Trump’s actions fall outside the accepted legal framework.
According to the 1973 War Powers Resolution, a president can authorize military action only under specific conditions like a formal war declaration, congressional approval, or a direct attack on U.S. interests—none of which apply in this case, some Democrats argue.
Despite the controversy, the Senate recently rejected a resolution requiring Trump to obtain congressional authorization for future military moves against Iran. The vote largely followed party lines, with Senator Rand Paul notably joining Democrats in support of the measure.
