Palestinian prisoner welcomes second child through smuggled sperm

Palestinian prisoner Saeed Al-Hathnawi welcomed his second child, Mawada, conceived via smuggled sperm.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Palestinian prisoner Saeed Al-Hathnawi, aged 45 and from the town of Qabatiya near Jenin, welcomed the birth of his second child—a baby girl named Mawada—on Monday. The child was conceived through sperm smuggled from inside an Israeli prison.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS), the birth represents a powerful act of resistance and hope, as many long-term detainees continue to build families despite harsh prison conditions. Mawada was born at Istishari Arab Hospital in Ramallah.

Al-Hathnawi has been imprisoned since 2006 and is serving a 35-year sentence. He married two years ago, and in 2024, he and his wife had their first child, Malika, also conceived through smuggled sperm. During his imprisonment, he lost both parents and a brother and was not allowed to attend their funerals.

The PPS described sperm smuggling as a form of nonviolent resistance and personal victory, enabling prisoners to maintain a sense of life and purpose beyond prison walls. Despite numerous challenges, many Palestinian families have succeeded in this effort.

Human rights organizations and prisoner advocacy groups view these stories as powerful examples of resilience and highlight the emotional and familial toll of Israel’s incarceration policies, which often violate international humanitarian law.
