Malta announces official recognition of Palestinian statehood

Malta has declared its decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, with formal recognition set for next month. The UN resolution granted Palestine new rights, but US vetoes continue to block full membership. Washington remains Israel’s main international backer

AhlulBayt News Agency: Malta has officially declared its decision to recognize Palestinian statehood amid Israel’s ongoing war against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Speaking at an event in northern Malta on Sunday, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that the formal recognition of Palestine will take place next month during the French-Saudi conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Malta, a small European island-state in the Mediterranean Sea, already hosts a Palestinian ambassador and voted last year in favor of full Palestinian UN membership. However, it had not formally recognized Palestine as a state until now.

A total of 143 countries voted in favor of upgrading Palestine’s status at the UN, while nine voted against and 25 abstained.

The UN resolution granted Palestine new “rights and privileges,” recognizing it as a qualified state to join the UN as a full member.

Despite this, the United States has consistently blocked Palestinian efforts to gain full UN membership by using its veto power against pro-Palestinian resolutions in favor of Israel.

Washington remains Israel’s main international backer, allowing the regime to continue its policies of forced displacement, occupation, and violence against Palestinian civilians.
