AhlulBayt News Agency: Al-Azhar chief Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb has emphasized the need to continue interfaith dialogue between Al-Azhar and the Catholic Church.
During a phone call on Wednesday, al-Tayeb congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his recent election as the head of the Catholic Church.
He expressed his best wishes for the new pope, hoping he would succeed in fulfilling his spiritual and humanitarian mission at this critical moment in world history.
Al-Tayeb highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions between Al-Azhar and the Catholic Church, stressing the need to promote human brotherhood and interfaith understanding.
He noted that cooperation between the two religious institutions serves as a key pillar in fostering peaceful coexistence and rejecting extremism.
During the call, both leaders discussed pressing international issues, urging increased efforts to end global conflicts, particularly the war in Gaza, as well as ongoing crises in Ukraine and Sudan.
They emphasized the need to support innocent victims, advocating for humanitarian assistance and justice in conflict zones.
Al-Tayeb and Pope Leo XIV agreed on the need for religious institutions to unite in spreading a culture of just peace, while championing the aspirations of the poor and oppressed worldwide.
The discussion also addressed the moral and spiritual responsibilities of religious leadership, calling for faith communities to play a constructive role in serving humanity.
Pope Leo XIV, who was elected earlier this month, is the first American to lead the Catholic Church in its 2,000-year history.
Originally from Chicago, the 69-year-old cleric spent much of his career serving in Peru, before leading the Vatican’s influential Dicastery for Bishops.
