Following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated. The crisis has led to the closure of 1,100 Quranic schools, affecting thousands of children. The UN has urged restraint, calling for measures to prevent further escalation

AhlulBayt News Agency: Tensions have escalated following last week’s deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. The Pahalgam attack, which occurred on April 22, claimed 26 lives and left many injured, marking the deadliest assault on civilians in the region in over two decades.

In response, India and Pakistan have implemented reciprocal measures. India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a World Bank-mediated agreement signed in 1960, and closed the Wagah-Attari border crossing. Pakistan, in turn, halted visa issuance for Indian nationals and closed its airspace to Indian airlines. The heightened tensions have impacted daily life, including religious education.

Hafiz Nazeer Ahmed, head of the local religious affairs department, announced a 10-day closure of 1,100 Quranic schools in Kashmir, affecting thousands of children learning the Quran. Meanwhile, a source in Pakistan-administered Kashmir attributed the shutdown to border instability and the possibility of armed conflict.

Amid rising concerns, the United Nations has intervened. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held separate discussions with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, stressing the need to prevent further escalation. He reiterated the UN’s commitment to peace and pledged support for efforts to de-escalate hostilities.
