AhlulBayt News Agency: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted India’s armed forces full operational authority to respond to the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. The attack claimed the lives of 26 civilians and has reignited tensions with Pakistan, raising concerns over a possible escalation in one of the world's most volatile regions.
The massacre at Pahalgam, regarded as one of the deadliest incidents in recent years, has sparked widespread outrage across India. In response, Modi removed bureaucratic barriers, empowering military leadership to act without constraints. This move comes amid growing cross-border tensions marked by retaliatory rhetoric, border skirmishes, and reports of drone activity between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Although Modi has yet to specify military plans, Indian forces have been authorized to “respond as they see fit.” Officials warn that the situation could lead to a broader regional crisis as both countries claim Kashmir and have a long history of conflict over the territory.
The current flare-up follows years of instability in Kashmir, with previous escalations—such as the 2019 Pulwama attack—triggering military standoffs and airstrikes. Global powers, including the U.S. and China, have called for restraint, urging both sides to avoid further destabilization.
