AhlulBayt News Agency: Middle East Eye has criticized Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Self-governing Authority, for failing to act as a unifying leader during the ongoing Gaza crisis. Instead of proposing solutions for national unity, Abbas has condemned Hamas and denied his role in deepening divisions among Palestinians.
Abbas’s rejection of the 2006 election results, which Hamas won under international supervision, contributed to the separation of Gaza from the West Bank, fracturing Palestine into three fragmented territories. A September 2024 poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research revealed that only 6% of Palestinians would vote for Abbas, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction. The boycott of Abbas’s speech by groups like the Popular Front and the National Initiative further underscores the depth of the national rift.
Over the past two decades, Abbas has failed to present any meaningful plan for reconciliation. Meanwhile, the Zionist regime has expanded settlement construction, displacing hundreds of Palestinians and killing 150 people in the West Bank in 2022, advancing its annexation agenda. Despite these actions, Abbas’s security coordination with Tel Aviv has proven ineffective in countering settler violence. His demand for Hamas to hand over Gaza to the Authority, while Israel continues to violate ceasefire agreements, has been deemed unrealistic.
Palestinians, facing expulsion threats and escalating Zionist crimes, require a unifying leadership to confront their common enemy. However, Abbas’s divisive policies have weakened Palestine’s ability to resist occupation and aggression.
