AhlulBayt News Agency: Hamas has denounced the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as the deputy chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the vice president of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
In a statement, the Palestinian resistance movement labeled the decision as “a response to external pressures” and accused the PA of following a “monopolistic strategy” that disregards national consensus.
“The appointment of al-Sheikh undermines national interests and exacerbates political divisions,” Hamas stated, further asserting that the move reflects the determination of prominent PA and PLO figures to suppress these institutions.
Hamas called on all Palestinian groups to reject the decision and work towards “rebuilding the PLO on national and democratic foundations, free from foreign intervention.”
The group underscored the necessity for Palestinian leadership to prioritize ending Israeli aggression and genocide against the Palestinian people, as well as confronting the regime’s occupation and settlement activities.
In a controversial step last Thursday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas named al-Sheikh, a senior Fatah official, as his deputy.
The PLO Executive Committee and Central Council endorsed the decision on Saturday, elevating al-Sheikh to the second-highest position in the organization under Abbas.
However, the appointment faced strong opposition from resistance groups, particularly as major factions boycotted the PLO Central Council meeting in protest.
The PLO, which acts as an umbrella organization for various Palestinian political factions, excludes Hamas and Islamic Jihad due to their opposition to Abbas's concessions to the Israeli regime.
