Canada’s PM vows to fight US trade war, defends sovereignty

Canada’s newly-elected Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a bold statement condemning the United States for its trade policies, accusing Washington of betrayal and vowing to overcome the challenges posed by escalating tensions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Canada’s newly-elected Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a bold statement condemning the United States for its trade policies, accusing Washington of betrayal and vowing to overcome the challenges posed by escalating tensions.

Speaking to supporters in Ottawa after his Liberal Party secured a parliamentary victory, Carney declared, “We will win this trade war,” while warning Canadians of difficult times ahead due to US tariffs and threats of annexation. He emphasized that the traditional relationship between Canada and the US, once defined by increasing economic integration, has fundamentally changed.

Carney’s remarks come amidst growing frustration over the US administration’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian-made automobiles, which has severely impacted Canada’s economy and sparked widespread patriotism. The fallout from these aggressive trade measures played a significant role in Carney’s electoral success, rallying support from smaller parties like the NDP and Bloc Quebecois.

In his victory speech, Carney acknowledged the sacrifices Canadians would need to make in the face of these challenges, asserting that the era of open global trade anchored by the US is over. He also condemned threats from Washington, including suggestions of making Canada the 51st state, stating, “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never ever happen.”

The Liberal Party won 167 seats in the election, falling short of the majority needed to govern independently, while the Conservative Party secured 145 seats. Despite this, Carney’s leadership has been seen as a unifying force capable of confronting the US trade war and defending Canada’s sovereignty.
