Israeli top court lets Sheikh Jarrah families keep homes for now

The Israeli high court of justice ruled on Tuesday that four Palestinian families threatened with eviction in the occupied east al-Quds neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah can remain in their homes for the time being.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Israeli high court of justice ruled on Tuesday that four Palestinian families threatened with eviction in the occupied east al-Quds neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah can remain in their homes for the time being.

Sami Irshid, a lawyer representing the Palestinian families, said the court decision was issued in favor of the families of al-Jaouni, al-Kurd, Iskafi, and Abu Hasna.

In the meantime, the Palestinian families will deposit a symbolic amount of rent —2,400 shekels ($740) per year — in a bank account belonging to both sides’ lawyers until a final decision on property rights in Sheikh Jarrah is reached, according to Irshid.

He said that according to the new decision, the past court verdicts regarding ownership do not apply, and all the residents of Sheikh Jarrah can argue and prove their ownership.
