AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): At least 20 civilians including 12 children were killed on Sunday in airstrikes by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Afghan security forces in the east of the country.
According to Reuters, local officials said the military strike which is said to be 'the latest in a series targeting senior insurgents' targeted Sharif Mawiya, a Taliban commander in Kunar Province.
During attacks by Afghan security forces in the southern province of Helmand on December second, its governor who was among Taliban was killed.
During this month, several other Taliban commanders were also killed by Afghan forces backed by the United States and the Afghan Air Force. This, however, poses a risk to the lives of civilians.
The number of fatalities from bombings by NATO and the Afghan army has sharply increased in 2018.
'According to United Nations figures, 313 civilians were killed and 336 wounded in airstrikes by U.S. and Afghan forces in the nine months to the end of September, a 39 per cent increase from the same period in 2017.'
Since 2011, Afghanistan has been engulfed by a rising wave of violence and despite the presence of foreign troops, many parts of the country remain plagued by militancy.
The United States and its allies in NATO occupied the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
The Taliban and other militant groups have been carrying out bloody attacks across Afghanistan, killing the military and civilians alike and taking heavy toll on women and children.
