Demonstrators to gather outside Downing Street as Mohammad bin Salman begins UK visit

Salman is due to meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May at her countryside residence for talks on Thursday and will also be hosted for lunch and dinner by Britain’s royals.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Demonstrators are expected to gather outside Downing Street in London on Wednesday to protest against the visit of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to the UK.

Salman is due to meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May at her countryside residence for talks on Thursday and will also be hosted for lunch and dinner by Britain’s royals.

According to the Financial Times newspaper, Saudi Arabia and the UK will sign a series of agreements during the three day visit, worth more than USD 100 billion.

However, the UK’s opposition politicians and international rights groups have called on May to challenge the crown prince on Saudi Arabia’s rights abuses both at home and abroad.

The leader of the British opposition Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn said that May should tell Bin Salman that Britain would no longer supply arms to Riyadh “while the devastating Saudi-led bombing of Yemen continues”.

Saudi Arabia started bombing Yemen in March 2015. Tens of thousands have since been killed and the military campaign has paved the way for one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes in living memory.

British arms companies are some of the biggest suppliers of weapons to Saudi Arabia, and the British government has approved billions of pounds in export licenses over the past three years.
