Bahrain yesterday allowed a daily which has been critical of the government in its coverage of Shiite-led protests to republish after sacking its chief editor, the state news agency BNA reported.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “The board of directors... decided to sack Al Wasat editor-in-chief Mansur Al Jamri... Meanwhile, the Information Affairs Authority has decided to allow Al Wasat to republish as per tomorrow,” an English-language statement on BNA said.

Late on Saturday, the authorities said Al Wasat’s publication had been suspended over reports critical of the government in its coverage of a month-long Shiite-led protest that was quashed last month, BNA said. The information affairs body also referred the newspaper for investigation, it said. The daily’s managing editor Walid Nouwaihidh and head of local news Aqeel Mirza were also sacked, BNA reported.

Jamri was replaced by Obaidaly Al Obaidaly, BNA said, adding: “The panel has also decided to elect a new board of directors within a month.” State television accused Al Wasat of publishing “fabricated” reports last week about the “security developments in Bahrain”, claiming that it printed “false news” and “fake names of people claimed to have been abused by police.”
