Germany strongly condemned Israel for approving 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem, branding it "not acceptable."

According to Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA), Addressing a routine weekly government press briefing in Berlin on Wednesday, a foreign ministry spokesman said the Israeli decision gave "an entirely wrong signal in terms of the content and the timing."

Stefan Bredohl stressed the Israeli move was "not compatible with the Middle East road map which calls for a freeze of all settlement activities."

Berlin has repeatedly expressed "great concern" over the ongoing Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Germany views the building of Israeli settlements as "an obstacle towards a political solution of the Mideast peace process."
